Google Is Putting Ads in AI Mode Follow-Up Questions. Its Help Page Says Ads Don't Change Which Sites AI Mode Cites
On October 28 Google said it is launching multiturn ads in AI Mode in the U.S. and scaling AI Mode ads to ten countries. Its help page says paid ads do not influence organic AI answers.
On October 28, 2026, Google said it is launching "multiturn ads" in the United States, which means ads can now appear in follow-up questions in AI Mode, and that it is scaling ads in AI Mode to ten more countries. Google's own help page says two things that matter for a brand deciding where to put effort: buying ads does not influence which sites the organic AI answer cites, and being cited does not change a site's ad eligibility.
What is established
Google's October 28 post states:
- Ads in AI Mode are scaling in Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Google "plan[s] to expand to additional locales" in Q4 2026, naming Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom.
- "To allow ads in follow-up queries in AI Mode, we are launching multiturn ads in the U.S."
- Ads are labeled "Sponsored."
- "Click-through rates are already similar between sponsored and organic product list items within AI Mode." Search Engine Journal reports that the footnote behind this is Google's internal U.S. data for August 20 to September 3, 2026. Paralax has not seen the underlying data.
Google's help page on ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode, read on November 2, 2026, adds the mechanics:
- Ads can appear "within or alongside" AI-generated responses, "including across follow-up questions in AI Mode."
- Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible automatically. An advertiser cannot "target ads exclusively to AI Overviews or AI Mode, or opt out of showing ads in them separately from Search." Negative keywords and brand exclusions still apply.
- Ads can run with an "AI explainer," text generated by Gemini that can use "information from the user's query, the AI response, and publicly available sources including your website." Advertisers "can't manually write, edit, approve, or opt out of them."
- On whether paid ads affect organic answers: "No. Organic AI Overviews and AI Mode responses are generated independently using Google's Search quality and ranking systems. Buying ads doesn't influence organic AI answers, and whether your site is cited organically doesn't affect your ad auction eligibility."
- The help page lists ad serving within AI Overviews and AI Mode in the United States, Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia (AI Overviews only), Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan (text ads only), the Philippines and Singapore, in English. It says the list may not be exhaustive.
What it changes for a brand
Paid and cited stay separate jobs, on Google's own statement. A brand that wants to be named in an AI Mode answer cannot buy that, and a brand that is cited gets no ad advantage. Treat a sponsored unit under an answer as a paid slot that sits beside the organic citation, not as evidence of it. The statement is Google's. Paralax has not tested it.
If you already run Search, Shopping or Performance Max, you are probably already eligible. There is no separate switch. A brand that does not want its ads in these answers has negative keywords and brand exclusions, not an opt-out.
An AI explainer can draw on your site. Google says the explainer may use publicly available sources "including your website," and the advertiser cannot edit it. What your pages state plainly is therefore also input to text that appears next to your ad.
Measurement needs a sponsored label. This is Paralax's inference, not a Google statement: an answer-tracking panel that collects AI Mode responses in the U.S. may now capture sponsored units in follow-up turns, and a count of brands "shown" should separate them from cited sources. Paralax did not test any tracker.
What is not known
- How often ads appear in U.S. follow-up questions, and whether multiturn ads have reached all U.S. users. Google's post says it is "launching" them.
- What ads in follow-up turns do to which sources AI Mode cites. Google's statement is that they do nothing to the organic answer; no outside measurement of that is cited here.
- Whether the countries named for Q4 launch on the stated schedule.
- Search Engine Journal also reports that Alphabet's chief business officer said lower AI Mode monetization was one of three reasons Search revenue growth slowed in Q3. Paralax has not read the call transcript.
Method note
Google's post and help page were read in full on November 2, 2026. The help page carries no revision date and is described as current when read. Search Engine Journal was read for the earnings-call and click-through footnote details; no figure that Google's pages or that article do not carry is used here. The Google AI Mode change log keeps the dated record.
