Claude Duet Adds a Distinct Browser Identity for Websites
Claude Duet identifies its cloud browser to websites, creating an access decision rather than evidence of changed public search rankings.
Claude Duet gives website operators an identifiable browser surface to distinguish from public Claude Search. The practical change is access: Anthropic says Duet browser requests identify themselves, and some large websites chose to prevent visits before the research preview opened.
Anthropic launched the preview on October 21, 2026, starting with US Pro and Max subscribers through a waitlist. Its October 23 security explanation supplies the consequential detail for publishers, merchants and brand teams: a cloud browser that can return page text to an agent, with a distinct User-Agent header and published browsing IP addresses.
What the browser changes
Duet is a proactive agent built for professionals and small business owners. Memory, skills and connected apps carry over from a Claude account. It checks connected accounts every few hours, prepares a morning brief and can continue requested work while the user is away.
The cloud browser gives those tasks a route to websites as well as connected apps. Anthropic says the browser runs in its own dedicated virtual machine, separate from the model and the cloud computers where the agent works. The agent operates it through fixed commands such as opening a page, clicking and typing. Page text can return for the agent to read.
That makes a website visit a source-input event within a task. A publisher can supply an article; a merchant can supply product information. Whether that material is selected, cited or used to recommend a brand is a further outcome, not something a successful browser request alone demonstrates.
The commercial use case is concrete. Anthropic says Duet can purchase business items through Link from Stripe and check out at online stores through Shop Pay. The launch describes approval for purchases. It establishes an agent that can reach a transaction, not a measured rule for discovering or ranking merchants.
Websites can recognize the browser
The security article states the identification policy directly:
Today, requests that its web browser sends include a distinct User-Agent header, and we publish the public IP addresses it browses from, so sites can recognize it and decide how to treat it.
Anthropic also says it contacted several large websites before launch, offered them the option to prevent Duet visits, and that some chose to do so. Access is therefore a real operating decision, not just a prediction about future agent traffic.
For an operator investigating Duet visits, preserve three separate observations:
- Access: the recognized browser request reached the page and received a response.
- Use: page material appeared in the task or answer.
- Recommendation or citation: the agent named the brand as a choice or attributed information to the page.
A log entry can support the first. It does not, by itself, establish the other two. This brief reports the vendor identification statement; it does not verify the exact Duet User-Agent string or its IP ranges.
Keep Duet separate from the public search baseline
Anthropic already documents Claude-SearchBot for search indexing and Claude-User for user-directed retrieval. Do not assume those crawler names identify the Duet browser: this launch describes an agent browser, not a tested mapping to those bots.
Duet also inherits private account context. A task informed by connected apps and memory is not the same observation as a public-web answer available to an unconnected user. Availability matters too: the launch starts with waitlisted US Pro and Max subscribers, with the preview included in those plans and sharing their usage limits.
The immediate decision is to investigate Duet browser access where website visits matter, while recording those observations separately from public Claude Search citation reporting. The two announcements establish the new product and its access policy; they do not establish changed public-search ranking weights or a citation lift.
Evidence scope. Primary launch and security articles read on October 28, 2026. Paralax did not run a Duet task, inspect Duet traffic or measure brand recommendations for this brief. The Claude engine log keeps the dated record.
