ChatGPT Referral Tags Reportedly Went Missing for About a Week After Its October Model Rollout
ChatGPT links were reported to lose the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag from 8 to 15 October 2026, in the week after GPT-6 began rolling out. OpenAI has not confirmed it.
OpenAI began rolling GPT-6 with Intelligent UI into the Chat tab of ChatGPT on 7 October 2026. Its announcement said the rollout would expand to Free and Go the next day. On 14 and 15 October, people tracking ChatGPT traffic reported that links in ChatGPT answers had stopped carrying utm_source=chatgpt.com, and then that a fix had begun (Search Engine Roundtable). The rollout is OpenAI's own statement. The tag loss and the fix are reports from outside OpenAI, and we found no confirmation of either on an OpenAI page we can read.
For a brand that reads ChatGPT referral traffic, the implication is about measurement. Annotate 8 to 15 October, read ChatGPT and Direct sessions together for those days, and do not call the dip lost demand until that comparison is done. OpenAI's pages also do not say where citations appear inside Intelligent UI, so no change in citation placement can be claimed from OpenAI's words. The running record is the ChatGPT Change Log.

What OpenAI says about GPT-6, Intelligent UI and search
OpenAI says GPT-6 in ChatGPT "introduces Intelligent UI", so responses can include graphics, buttons, forms and charts. It covers the Chat tab, not Work or Voice. GPT-6 Sol serves the paid plans and GPT-6 Luna serves Free and Go. The Pro reasoning option, which uses GPT-6 Astra, does not support Intelligent UI. On the web, choosing Personalization, then Layout and Visuals, then Simple "reduces visual and interactive elements, though some may still appear" (Intelligent UI help article). On search, OpenAI says GPT-6 "makes better decisions about when to look something up" and that GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner, on average, than GPT-5.6 Instant on questions that need web search.
The pages leave out where citations appear. The announcement, the Intelligent UI article and the release notes for 1 to 20 October never mention citations, sources or links. The search help article describes citations and a Sources view, but not GPT-6 or Intelligent UI.
Our reading: OpenAI documents that Intelligent UI availability varies by tab, reasoning option, setting and Enterprise admin settings, but not what that does to citations. No OpenAI page supports a claim that GPT-6 moved or reduced citations.
What others report about the referral tag
Search Engine Roundtable reported that OpenAI seemed to have removed the UTM parameters on ChatGPT links, starting with the GPT-6 release. The article embeds a post dated 14 October and was updated on 15 October. It relayed Adobe's Cedric Huesler, who attributed the change to how GPT-6 opens links, which withholds the referrer and drops the tag, so analytics files the visit under Direct. On about 500 pages where ChatGPT drove at least 5% of visits, he found ChatGPT visits down about 31,000 a day and Direct up about 26,000 a day for 9 to 13 October against the prior week, which he describes as four days of sampled data. Sébastien Billard wrote on X that he saw a drop in ChatGPT human traffic and ChatGPT-User bot traffic and a rise in OAI-SearchBot traffic since 7 October, without figures or named sites.
Search Engine Journal adds Graphite and LLM Pulse data showing ChatGPT-attributed sessions falling from 9 October, and says LLM Pulse could not separate lost visits from unlabeled ones. The explanations differ. Huesler points to how links open, Graphite's Ethan Smith to inline links losing the tag while the Sources panel kept it, and Profound to the rising share of Intelligent UI answers. We found no OpenAI page that offers any of them. The firms cited sell SEO or AI search tools, and Huesler works at Adobe.
On the fix, Search Engine Journal reports that Huesler said OpenAI confirmed to him on 14 October that it was a bug, and that a fix began rolling out early on 15 October. By 9 a.m. Pacific, he said, tagged clicks were back to roughly 95% to 100% of the same hour a week earlier across the domains he tracks. He added that most ChatGPT clicks still arrive without a referrer, and consultant Glenn Gabe replied that he was not yet seeing the fix on paid or free accounts. That is the chain we can read: one person says OpenAI told him it was a bug, and he said so publicly. It is not an OpenAI statement, and the release-note entries for 1 to 20 October say nothing about link tracking.
The page that documented the tag now redirects
Our 6 July brief cited OpenAI's Publishers and Developers FAQ for the tag. An Internet Archive capture of that page, taken on 4 October 2026, still carries the sentence: ChatGPT "automatically includes the UTM parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs." On 20 October the live URL redirects to OpenAI's article on ChatGPT Atlas retirement, which does not mention UTM parameters, and the search help article does not mention referral parameters. We do not know when the redirect began or why.
The tag was documented as of 4 October, and we cannot point to a live OpenAI page that documents it today. The July brief's point holds: the tag counts the click an answer produced, never the answer. The gap shows the limit from the other side. A session count tied to one parameter moves when the parameter moves, and says nothing about whether ChatGPT cited the brand.
What to check
Measurement
- Annotate 8 to 15 October 2026 in every ChatGPT referral report. The 9 a.m. recovery figure is Pacific and the other edges have no stated time zone, so confirm the edges in your own data.
- Read ChatGPT and Direct together for each landing page ChatGPT sent visitors to before the break, and for the homepage, as Search Engine Journal advises.
- Treat 7 and 8 October as a baseline break for any ChatGPT tracking you run: the model and layout changed per OpenAI and, reportedly, the link tagging for about a week, so a trend line that crosses those dates compares different experiences.
Crawler access
- OpenAI's search help article says to allow OAI-Searchbot and confirm that your host or content delivery network allows OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses. Check logs for 7 to 15 October for OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User separately, by verified IP. Our September brief on the two bots shows why they can move apart, and the crawler log holds OpenAI's bot changes.
Source architecture
- The same article says ChatGPT ranks results using multiple factors and that placement is not guaranteed. Nothing in the OpenAI pages we read supports redesigning pages around where Intelligent UI shows citations. Keep the landing pages that received chatgpt.com sessions in September stable and crawlable, and use them as the comparison set for later readings.
FAQ
What changed in ChatGPT in October 2026?
OpenAI began rolling GPT-6 with Intelligent UI into ChatGPT's Chat tab on 7 October for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, and said it would expand to Free and Go starting the next day. Responses can now include graphics, buttons, forms and charts, and web users can choose a simpler layout.
Does OpenAI say where citations appear in Intelligent UI?
Not in the pages we read on 20 October. The announcement, the Intelligent UI help article and the October release notes do not mention citations, and the search help article describes a Sources view without reference to Intelligent UI.
Did ChatGPT lose its utm_source=chatgpt.com tag, and did OpenAI confirm it?
People tracking ChatGPT traffic reported the loss from about 8 October, and Adobe's Cedric Huesler said OpenAI told him on 14 October that it was a bug. We found no OpenAI page that confirms the loss, the cause or the fix.
Which dates should a brand annotate in analytics?
8 to 15 October 2026, the window Huesler gave according to Search Engine Journal. Check the edges against your own data, since the fix reportedly began early on 15 October and the zone is not stated.
Is the ChatGPT UTM tag still documented by OpenAI?
It was documented in the Publishers and Developers FAQ as archived on 4 October 2026. That URL now redirects to an article on ChatGPT Atlas retirement, and we found no live OpenAI page that states the tag today.
Method note. OpenAI pages read in full on 2026-10-20: the GPT-6 announcement, the Intelligent UI help article, the ChatGPT release notes (entries dated 1 to 20 October), the search help article and the OpenAI news page, which dates the announcement 7 October. We searched each for citation, source, link, referrer, UTM and analytics wording. The announcement, the Intelligent UI article and the October release-note entries contain none of it. The search help article mentions citations and Sources but not Intelligent UI, GPT-6 or referral parameters. Those searches are the basis for each statement above that an OpenAI page does not say something. The Publishers FAQ at help.openai.com/en/articles/12627856-publishers-and-developers-faq resolved to the Atlas retirement article on 2026-10-20, and we read its 4 October text in the Internet Archive capture. The reported tag loss and fix come from Search Engine Roundtable and Search Engine Journal, both read in full on the same date. We could not open the LinkedIn posts or the Profound, Graphite and LLM Pulse pages, so their figures are as those outlets relay them. The search help article shows no edit date and names GPT-5.6 in one section, so it may predate 7 October.
